In an interview with Time magazine, American President Donald Trump warned that Israel will lose the support of the United States if it continues its plans to annex the West Bank. Trump emphasized that he promised Arab countries that annexation would not happen, considering the negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza. This statement came as the Israeli Parliament, Knesset, was discussing two bills aimed at extending sovereignty over the West Bank, which Washington believes undermines peace efforts. Trump mentioned that he pressured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a peace plan, emphasizing that Saudi Arabia could normalize relations with Israel by the end of the year.

He also criticized the Palestinian leadership and praised his relationship with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas. Netanyahu's office tried to downplay the impact of the Knesset vote, stating that the bills are political provocations from the opposition. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett criticized the current coalition, accusing it of undermining Israel's sovereignty.
