Donald Trump declared on Saturday that he intends to drastically reduce the number of American soldiers stationed in Germany, after the Pentagon announced a reduction of 5,000 soldiers, equivalent to about 15% of the total force of 36,000.

This decision comes in the context of criticisms from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who emphasized the lack of a clear strategy from the U.S. in Iran. Trump accused European allies of lacking support in the face of international challenges and urged them to strengthen their defense.

Although Republican leaders on defense committees in Congress expressed concern about this decision, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius acknowledged that the withdrawal of American troops was expected and emphasized the need for Europeans to take on more responsibilities for their security. This situation raises questions about the impact on regional security and transatlantic relations.
