American President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday a drawing illustrating Venezuela as the 51st state of the USA, accompanied by the text 'the 51st state'. This statement comes in the context where Trump boasts that he has Venezuela under control, after the capture of former president Nicolas Maduro on January 3.
Although Trump had previously suggested that Canada could become the 51st state, he is now also extending his ambitions towards Venezuela. Delcy Rodriguez, the interim president of Venezuela, stated that her country has never considered this option, emphasizing the love of the Venezuelan people for independence.
At the same time, Trump promised that he would make efforts to free political prisoners in Venezuela, expressing his confidence in Rodriguez. Since Maduro's capture, she has signed an amnesty law, but NGOs estimate that about 500 political prisoners remain in prison.
