Donald Trump announced on Monday the nomination of Todd Blanche, his former personal attorney, for the position of permanent Attorney General of the United States, according to Le Figaro. Blanche has already been serving as the acting Attorney General since April, following the departure of Pam Bondi.
Since taking office, he has indicted former FBI Director James Comey for 'threatening Trump's life.' He has also attempted to create a $1.8 billion fund to compensate what the Trump administration considers to be the weaponization of justice against its supporters. Democrats have denounced this fund as secret and intended to reward the president's supporters, including those involved in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Blanche's confirmation in the Senate Judiciary Committee could be difficult, given the opposition from Democratic senators and the lack of unanimous support from Republicans. Democratic Senator Dick Durbin has already criticized the nomination, highlighting the corruption associated with the Trump administration.
It remains to be seen whether Republican senators will openly contest the president's decision.
