President Donald Trump stated that he is considering imposing tariffs against countries that do not support his plan to purchase Greenland, a Danish territory, on national security grounds. At an event dedicated to rural health, Trump asserted that Greenland is essential for national security, including for Denmark, and emphasized that the United States has the capacity to intervene in the event that Russia or China wishes to occupy the island.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that only 17% of Americans support the purchase of Greenland, and the majority of voters from both parties oppose the use of military force for annexation. The cost of the purchase could reach 700 billion dollars, exceeding the annual budget of the Department of Defense. Critics among Republicans, such as Senator Mitch McConnell, have challenged this initiative. Following discussions with Danish officials, Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that there is a "fundamental disagreement" regarding the American position, emphasizing that Trump's desire to "conquer" Greenland is not in the interest of the kingdom.
