President Donald Trump stated that he is considering the possibility of reducing the number of American troops in Germany, following tensions with the German chancellor and NATO related to the conflict with Iran. Currently, over 36,000 active soldiers and 1,500 reservists are stationed in Germany, which also hosts the headquarters of the U.S. European Command and the U.S. Africa Command. Trump has expressed frustrations towards European allies, accusing them of avoiding involvement in the war with Iran and threatened to withdraw from NATO. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the U.S. handling of the conflict, which provoked Trump's reaction. Although there was a proposal to reduce troops in 2020, it was canceled by Biden. The current troop reduction is not considered a withdrawal from Europe, but part of a strategy to balance American military forces.
