Recent discussions between American President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky could pave the way for the first phone conversation between Zelensky and Vladimir Putin in over five years. An informed source told Fox News that such a discussion would represent a "diplomatic victory" for Trump. Relations between Putin and Zelensky have been tense, and their last conversations took place in July 2020. Since then, Zelensky has tried to initiate dialogue, but Putin has refused.
Despite the concerns expressed by Ukraine, Trump described the meeting with Zelensky as "extraordinary" and mentioned that 95% of the peace plan had been agreed upon, with the exception of the Donbas issue. Trump stated that Russia could help in the reconstruction of Ukraine by providing cheap electricity, and emphasized that he understands Putin's position regarding the continuation of the conflict.
