The administration of President Donald Trump has decided to terminate the temporary protected status (TPS) for Yemen, according to an announcement made by Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem. This measure affects over 1,000 Yemeni citizens who were benefiting from deportation relief and work permits.
Noem explained that the decision was made because the status contradicts the "national interest" of the U.S., following an assessment of conditions in Yemen and consultations with government agencies. TPS is intended for individuals from countries affected by natural disasters or armed conflicts, and the last extension of the status for Yemen occurred in 2024, with an expiration scheduled for March 3, 2025.
