American President Donald Trump will meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss the possible withdrawal of the United States from the North Atlantic Alliance.
The White House stated that Trump believes NATO has been "tested and has failed" in the context of the conflict with Iran. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt emphasized that Trump was disappointed by the insufficient support from European allies in the bombing campaign against Iran. During the meeting, Rutte will try to temper Trump's criticisms and highlight European progress in increasing defense budgets. Although American officials assert that the U.S. remains committed to NATO, tensions are rising following Trump's statements, in which he described the alliance as a "paper tiger".
