Trump considers that Spain is "profiteering" because it does not allocate 5% of GDP to defense

At the inauguration ceremony of the 'Council for Peace', Trump stated that he had obtained commitments from the majority of NATO allies to increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP, with the exception of Spain, which he called a "freeloader". Spain refused to allocate this percentage, considering it disproportionate and incompatible with social benefits, committing instead to reach 2.1% of GDP.

Trump criticized Spain and threatened it with trade reprisals for its refusal. In his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump stated that America has gained nothing from NATO, emphasizing that the US has protected Europe from the Soviet Union and Russia without receiving anything in return.
