American President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States sent weapons to protesters during the anti-government demonstrations in Iran that took place in January. In an interview with Fox News, Trump specified that the weapons were delivered through the Kurds, a minority that opposes the Iranian government.
This is the first time Trump publicly acknowledges this action, after denouncing the violent repression of the Iranian regime against the protesters. According to the Washington Post, Trump urged the Kurds to join the U.S. and Israel in efforts to achieve a regime change in Tehran.
The protests, triggered by the economic crisis, were brutally suppressed, with an official death toll of 3,117, and NGOs suggest that the actual number could be much higher. Despite the reprisals, the Iranian regime has managed to maintain power, and the U.S. and Israel have launched a bombing campaign against Iran, without showing signs that the regime might be in danger of losing control.
