In an interview with POLITICO, Donald Trump stated that Ukraine should hold presidential elections, even though the country's Constitution prohibits voting during martial law. Trump argued that it has been a long time since the last elections and that the Ukrainian people deserve to have this option.

He criticized the leadership of Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting that the war is being used as a pretext to avoid organizing elections. Zelensky, who was elected in 2019 for a five-year term, was supposed to hold elections in the first part of 2024, but the current martial law prevents this. Donald Trump emphasized the importance of democracy, stating that in the absence of elections, a situation arises in which democracy is compromised.
