The agreement signed between TPAO and ESSO Exploration International Limited aims to increase operational efficiency and facilitate the discovery of new gas and oil fields. Turkish officials emphasize the importance of combining offshore exploration expertise with ExxonMobil's international experience.

In 2024, BOTAS signed an agreement with ExxonMobil for the supply of liquefied natural gas. In the context of expanding exploration efforts for fields, especially in the Sakarya field, ExxonMobil warned that it might leave the European market due to strict regulations imposed by the EU. Exxon CEO Darren Woods criticized the EU Directive on corporate sustainability, considering it a form of "regulatory imperialism" that could severely impact European investments and contribute to the deindustrialization of the European economy.
