The watch, engraved with the initials JJA, was worn by Astor and then by his son. It was fully restored after being returned to the Astor family. John Jacob Astor died at the age of 47 in the sinking of the Titanic, one of the richest men in the world at the time. The amount raised at the auction exceeded initial estimates and became a record for an item related to the famous ship.
