Indian authorities have banned a cough syrup manufactured by Sresan Pharma, after tests showed the presence of diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic substance, in batches used by the new deceased children. The Ministry of Health confirmed that DEG levels exceeded permissible limits. Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan have suspended the sale of the syrup and other products from the same company. Cough syrups from India have been implicated in suspicious deaths in other countries as well, including in Gambia, where over 70 children died in 2022.
