Thousands of people gathered on Tuesday in front of Portugal’s Parliament, in Lisbon, to protest against high rents and a housing crisis that has worsened in recent years. The demonstration took place as lawmakers were debating the 2027 budget bill.

Rents in Portugal have doubled compared with 2017, while wages have failed to keep pace with the increases. Young people are among the hardest hit, and protesters accuse the authorities of taking no measures to ensure affordable housing.

Participants called for the withdrawal of a bill that would speed up evictions and eliminate rent caps for new contracts. The initiative passed its first reading after the far-right Chega party abstained.

Protests began on Sunday in Lisbon and Porto, where law enforcement dismantled tent camps set up by activists. The interventions left 11 people with minor injuries, including three police officers. Similar demonstrations have recently taken place in Spain as well, amid the housing shortage and the rapid rise in rents across Europe.
