The withdrawal of a rotating brigade of the US Army from Romania and other NATO countries at the border with Russia has generated strong criticism from American veterans. They believe that this decision is a strategic mistake, weakening the deterrent power of the alliance and favoring the actions of Vladimir Putin, in the context of the intensification of Russian aggression in the Black Sea region. The Pentagon justified the withdrawal as a "strategic adjustment" to redirect resources to the Indo-Pacific region, but critics, including Jeremy Hunt, a former intelligence services captain, argue that the timing is extremely inappropriate. Hunt emphasized that the withdrawal not only represents a tactical mistake but also a symbolic withdrawal, significantly diminishing the deterrent message that the American military presence was sending to Moscow. This served to train allies and to warn Russia about the US commitment to the sovereignty of Eastern European countries.
