The Venice Commission, an advisory body of the Council of Europe, elected a new leadership during its 145th plenary session, held on December 12-13.

Marta Cartabia was elected president for a two-year term, having been a member from Italy since 2017. Three vice-presidents were also elected: Renata Deskoska (North Macedonia), Eirik Holmoyvik (Norway), and Timothy Otty (United Kingdom). Romania is represented by Laura-Iuliana Scântei, a judge at the Constitutional Court, who was elected to the extended Bureau and appointed president of the Subcommittee for the Protection of National Minorities. Laura-Iuliana Scântei emphasized the importance of the Commission's role in defending fundamental rights. The Venice Commission brings together 61 members and provides legal advice to member states for alignment with European standards in the field of democracy and human rights.
