The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that the government can refuse to issue passports that mention a gender chosen by the holder, different from the sex assigned at birth. This decision was influenced by a decree signed by President Donald Trump, which annulled a 1992 practice that allowed the selection of a gender different from that at birth, including the option X introduced by former President Joe Biden.
Although the decision was challenged by organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Supreme Court ruled by a majority of 6 to 3 that mentioning the sex at birth does not violate the principle of equality. Justice Department lawyers argued that inaccurate identification of sex in official documents is not permitted. The ACLU criticized the decision, considering it a setback for individual liberties. The Court also approved the ban on transgender individuals from enlisting in the armed forces.
