The United States announced on Tuesday that it has designated Clan del Golfo, a Colombian drug cartel, as a 'foreign terrorist organization.' U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that this cartel is a powerful criminal organization with thousands of members, whose main source of income comes from cocaine trafficking. Clan del Golfo is responsible for terrorist attacks against government officials, law enforcement, military personnel, and civilians in Colombia. Additionally, the cartel, which has over 7,500 members, was founded on the remnants of former far-right militias. Despite its violence, the Colombian government is negotiating with this group under the auspices of Qatar, and Clan del Golfo is seeking to be recognized as a political organization, not as a criminal cartel, in order to benefit from different judicial treatment.
