The production of this coin has become unviable, with production costs rising from 1.42 cents to 3.69 cents per penny in the last decade. Currently, there are approximately 300 billion one-cent coins in circulation, far more than necessary for transactions. President Donald Trump has advocated for halting production to reduce public spending.
