The Swiss voted on Sunday against an anti-immigration initiative that proposed limiting the population to 10 million residents by 2050, according to projections published by the gfs.bern institute.
Approximately 55% of voters opposed the proposal, indicating that the majority prefer economic stability and relations with the European Union. The initiative, supported by the Swiss People's Party, would have led to the abandonment of the free movement agreement with the EU, which raised concerns among companies.
The current population of Switzerland is 9.1 million, and foreigners make up nearly 28% of the total. Opponents of the initiative highlighted the economic and social risks, arguing that such a measure would create chaos in the labor market. Migration expert Patrick Leisibach mentioned that concerns about personal well-being influenced voters' decisions, who wondered who would provide them with essential services in the future.
