The Russian drone Orion, built by Kronshtadt, is equivalent to the American Reaper drone and is equipped with electronic components sourced from the USA, according to an analysis by Ukrainian intelligence services (HUR). Although it was promoted by Russian officials in Syria, Orion only entered mass production at the beginning of the 2022 invasion. HUR has identified 43 Russian companies involved in the production of gadgets for Orion, but most essential electronic components, such as microchips, are supplied by Western manufacturers, especially Americans. This situation persists despite the sanctions imposed on Russia. Ukraine suggests improving export monitoring to prevent sanctions violations, calling for companies to label products with unique numbers to facilitate tracking.
