Before the recent episode, a German general warned that the maneuvers of four Russian military satellites near a commercial ICEYE satellite, used to provide intelligence to Ukraine, could pose a threat to networks such as Starlink. According to Michael Traut, the action can be carried out without a direct attack, through maneuvers that force satellites to consume fuel to avoid collisions, thereby reducing their operating lifespan and the quality of their services.
The incident was reported in the context of intensified activities following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, when Russian jamming and orbital proximity operations also increased, with Moscow not commenting on the accusations but warning that Western commercial satellites supporting Ukraine could become targets.
