The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has regretfully announced the death of Ambassador Aleksandr Mațegora, who passed away on December 6, 2025, without providing details about the cause of death. Mațegora, at the age of 70, had been the ambassador in Pyongyang since 2014 and had a career dedicated to economic and diplomatic cooperation between North Korea and Russia, starting from the 1970s.

The ministry emphasizes his significant contribution to strengthening bilateral relations, which have reached an unprecedented level in recent months, in the context of a diplomatic, military, and economic rapprochement between the two states. Additionally, North Korea has supported Russia in the conflict in Ukraine, providing soldiers and weaponry, and the two countries are united by a mutual defense pact from 2024.
