Aimee Picchi, associate editor at CBS MoneyWatch, reports that the U.S. Department of Labor will not publish the January 2026 employment report on schedule due to the partial government shutdown. A spokesperson for the Bureau of Labor Statistics confirmed that the report will be rescheduled once government funding resumes. This delay in employment data comes amid concerns about the labor market, as major companies like Amazon and UPS have announced significant staff reductions. At the same time, the Federal Reserve has kept the benchmark interest rate steady, noting an improvement in the unemployment rate and economic growth. This interruption in employment data follows major delays in federal economic data last fall, when a 43-day shutdown delayed the release of the consumer price index and labor market reports.
