The President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, dissolved the National Assembly by decree, before a vote that could have led to a 'temporary suspension' of his mandate. This decision comes in the wake of street protests and threats from the opposition, which gathered enough signatures to call for the vote. Rajoelina, elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2023, justified his action as necessary for the stability of the nation. The protests were supported by young people and officials, with visible anti-French messages in the capital. According to the Constitution, legislative elections must be organized within 60-90 days of the dissolution.
