The former Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohammad Shtayyeh, announced that the Palestinian Authority will send representatives to various European countries to request recognition of the state of Palestine. After a meeting with the Swiss Foreign Minister, Shtayyeh mentioned that he will visit the Netherlands and Austria, while another delegation will go to the Baltic countries. President Mahmoud Abbas will travel to Italy and Germany.
Recently, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Portugal officially recognized Palestine, followed by France. Israel condemned these actions, threatening to expand settlement activities in the West Bank. Shtayyeh emphasized the importance of Switzerland in this endeavor, considering the presence of UN agencies and its role in the Geneva Conventions. In Switzerland, a popular initiative has been launched to obtain recognition of Palestine, requiring 100,000 signatures to organize a referendum.
