The Maven artificial intelligence system developed by Palantir will become an official program of the U.S. military, according to a letter addressed to Pentagon leaders by Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg.

This decision will strengthen the use of identification technology for military targets within the U.S. armed forces and is expected to be implemented by the end of the fiscal year, in September. Maven is a command and control system that analyzes data from the battlefield, rapidly processing information from various sources, such as satellites and drones. Its transformation into an official program will facilitate adoption across all military branches and ensure stable long-term funding. This decision represents a significant success for Palantir, which has secured important government contracts, including an agreement worth up to $10 billion with the U.S. Army.

UN experts have expressed concerns about the ethical and legal risks associated with using AI in identifying military targets, emphasizing that lethal decisions must remain under human control. Palantir asserts that its system does not make lethal decisions, and the responsibility for selecting targets always rests with humans.
