The new Hungarian government, led by Peter Magyar, is preparing a radical change in energy policy, considering abandoning the partnership with the Russian giant Rosatom.

This decision could mark the end of Orban's influence in relations with Moscow and could leave Russia without a significant contract for the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant. The future Minister of Economy and Energy, Istvan Kapitany, emphasized in Parliament that non-transparent agreements with the Russian Federation are a thing of the past, questioning the costs and the way the Paks II project was awarded. Kapitany called for a transparent nuclear strategy and a review of the financial details of the project, which has been criticized by European courts for the lack of public tenders. Although Rosatom remains optimistic about the resumption of work, delays and adverse legal decisions provide the new government with strong arguments for a possible termination of the contract, valued at nearly 15 billion dollars.
