Rafael Lopez Aliaga, the conservative mayor of Lima, announced his resignation to become a candidate in the presidential elections in April 2026, following a political crisis caused by the dismissal of former president Dina Boluarte. With 10% of the voting intentions, he is the only politician with significant numbers in polls so far. According to the law, all officials must resign six months before elections.
