Rafael Lopez Aliaga, the conservative mayor of Lima, announced his resignation to become a candidate in the presidential elections in April 2026, following a political crisis caused by the dismissal of former president Dina Boluarte. With 10% of the voting intentions, he is the only politician with significant numbers in polls so far. According to the law, all officials must resign six months before elections. Boluarte's dismissal has heightened political instability, and Aliaga, known by the nickname 'Porky', uses a pig as his mascot to attract supporters.
