The Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Mark Carney has obtained a slim majority in the House of Commons, now holding 173 of the 343 seats, after winning at least two seats in Monday's by-elections. This comes a year after Carney took office and after five opposition members defected to the Liberals. With this majority, Carney can promote legislation without relying on opposition support, having the possibility to avoid federal elections until 2029. Canadian media projections indicate Liberal victories in two ridings in the Toronto area, while results from a third riding in Quebec are still unclear. This majority represents a significant turnaround for the Liberals, who were expected to lose the previous elections but benefited from a surge in support following the aggressive rhetoric of U.S. President Donald Trump. This is the first time in Canada that a majority has been formed through a combination of by-elections and defections to the governing party.
