The Kuomintang (KMT), the main opposition party in Taiwan, has chosen Cheng Li Wun as its new leader, effective November 1. Cheng, a former parliamentarian, won the elections amid rising tensions with China, which claims the island. Although the KMT lost the previous presidential elections, it holds the majority in Parliament, putting pressure on the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Cheng stated that the KMT will promote regional peace and will not support an increase in the defense budget, a policy of the current administration. She also dismissed allegations of Chinese interference in the elections, emphasizing that the use of the label "traitor" is a cheap political tactic.
