Researchers at the University of Oklahoma have identified the hormone FGF21 as having the potential to combat obesity by activating a brain region that controls metabolism and appetite. This discovery, published in the journal Cell Reports, suggests that FGF21 sends signals to the posterior brain, unlike GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy and Ozempic.
Dr. Matthew Potthoff and his team found that FGF21 interacts with the nucleus of the solitary tract and the postrema area, thereby influencing metabolism and reducing body weight. This research could lead to the development of more effective therapies with fewer side effects for obesity and steatohepatitis associated with metabolic dysfunction. Although FGF21 and GLP-1 target similar areas of the brain, they act differently, with FGF21 increasing metabolic activity. Future research is needed to further explore the effects of FGF21 on MASH.
