The FCAS program, aimed at building a fifth-generation fighter jet to replace the Rafale and Eurofighter aircraft, is facing significant difficulties, according to Reuters sources. Following a recent meeting of defense ministers from France, Germany, and Spain, it was noted that the 100 billion euro project is now considered "very unlikely." France is proposing to postpone a decision until next year, while Germany wanted to complete this process by the end of 2025. Discussions about the next phase of the program could be delayed until 2026, given the lack of benefit from a public dispute.
Additionally, the three countries have failed to reach an agreement on the drone systems and "combat cloud" outlined in the program. The main dispute centers on the French contractor Dassault's desire to take a leading role, a position contested by Germany. Furthermore, France and Germany have different needs regarding fighter jets, further complicating collaboration. The head of Dassault has expressed concerns about the future of the program, highlighting dependence on Germany's decisions regarding arms imports from the U.S.
