The European Commission has launched the first 'European Plan for Affordable Housing', addressing the urgent need for affordable and quality housing for European citizens. Housing prices have increased by over 60% in the last decade, and rents by 20%, affecting labor mobility and social cohesion. The plan aims to increase the supply of housing, stimulate investments, and regulate short-term rentals. Commissioner Dan Jorgensen emphasized that housing is a fundamental right and that resources must be mobilized to ensure accessibility. The plan includes measures for a more innovative construction sector and financial support for social housing.
The Commission will collaborate with local authorities to simplify regulations and will mobilize investments of 43 billion euros for housing. The initiatives specifically target young people, students, and low-income individuals, promoting solutions for homeless people. A new European Alliance for Housing will support the implementation of this plan.
