The European Commission reiterates the necessity of abolishing the clock change, a measure supported by a consultation from 2018, in which 84% of participants voted for its elimination. The introduction of the clock change in the 1970s was motivated by energy savings, but proponents of its abolition emphasize the negative impact on health and the low efficiency of energy savings. Although the European Parliament approved the measure, implementation has been blocked due to the lack of an agreement among the 27 member states.
The Transport Commissioner, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, stated that this system "irritates us all" and no longer brings benefits. Additionally, Spain and other countries have renewed calls for the abolition of this practice, but difficulties in reaching a consensus continue to hinder progress.
