Maros Sefcovic, the EU Commissioner for Trade, stated that the European Union should not "overload" the trade agreement with the United States by imposing additional requirements. In an interview, he emphasized the importance of respecting the agreement reached in July 2022, in Turnberry, Scotland. Sefcovic mentioned that the US prefers to adhere to the agreement as it was agreed upon, and this is mutual.
However, US patience with the EU's slow implementation of the agreement has run out, and Sefcovic has begun negotiations to find a compromise. The European Parliament has proposed amendments that could complicate the implementation of the agreement, including clauses on entry into force and expiration. Sefcovic expressed hope that a clear outcome will be reached, without adding global issues to the discussion, emphasizing that technical measures are intended to reduce tariffs on certain products. While France supports the Parliament's position, Germany opposes additional requirements. Sefcovic insisted on the importance of focusing on the main subject of the agreement.
