The EU could reactivate the measures from the energy crisis of 2022 in response to the war with Iran.

The European Union is considering reactivating the energy crisis measures used in 2022, when Russia reduced gas supplies in response to recent disruptions in energy markets caused by the war in Iran. The Energy Commissioner, Dan Jorgensen, has urged Europeans to limit travel to prevent energy shortages. Following a virtual meeting of EU energy ministers, Jorgensen mentioned that the plans include proposals to limit network tariffs and electricity taxes.

Although the supply of oil and natural gas is not directly affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Jorgensen highlighted concerns regarding the supply of refined petroleum products. The European Commission urges member states to act in a coordinated manner to address rising prices and has proposed voluntary measures to reduce demand, especially in the transport sector. Jorgensen emphasized the importance of a united response to avoid a global economic crisis of proportions.
