The European Union has decided to increase allocations for the Eastern Neighborhood by 25 million euros in the budget for 2026, a measure that includes support for the Republic of Moldova. The agreement was reached between the European Parliament and the EU Council, and Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan emphasized the importance of this increase, mentioning that it is a response to the withdrawal of American support for civil society in the region.

Mureșan highlighted that independent non-governmental organizations play a crucial role in strengthening democracy, especially in candidate countries like the Republic of Moldova, which faces pressures from the Russian Federation. The initiative was voted on by the plenary of the European Parliament on October 22, 2025.
