The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the protective shield of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, built to control radioactive materials from the 1986 disaster, no longer fulfills its safety function due to damage caused by drones.
A recent inspection confirmed that the isolation structure was affected by a drone attack in February, attributed to Russia. IAEA Director Rafael Grossi emphasized that, although repairs have been made, a complete repair is essential to prevent further degradation.
Although no radiation leaks have been reported, the incident highlights the ongoing risks to nuclear safety in the context of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Nuclear power plants in Ukraine remain under IAEA observation during this period of instability.
