Tensions between the United Kingdom and China have intensified after Beijing criticized the postponement of the decision regarding the 'mega-embassy' project in London. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed 'deep concern' after British Minister Steve Reed postponed the final decision until December 10. This dispute complicates British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's efforts to restore relations with Beijing, already affected by espionage allegations.
Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese ministry, accused the UK of 'disregard for the spirit of the contract', demanding respect for commitments. Although Starmer is seeking Chinese investments for infrastructure, the postponement of the decision is linked to controversies over espionage and the complexity of the request. Beijing purchased the land for the embassy in 2018, but the permit was denied by the local council.
