Hundreds of impoverished students clashed on Tuesday with law enforcement at the University of Belgrade, following a raid that intensified tensions between authorities and anti-government activists. The law enforcement used batons to disperse the demonstrators, who were chanting slogans against the authorities.
The raid was part of an investigation related to the death of a 25-year-old student, who died after falling from the window of the Faculty of Philosophy. This raid raised suspicions, occurring against the backdrop of anti-government protests that have been ongoing for over a year. Authorities accused university staff of negligence, and the rector and dean of the faculty were discredited by tabloids close to the government. The Minister of Education suggested that the leadership of the faculties should change, while the rector warned that the government perceives universities as a threat.
The European Union ambassador in Serbia called for avoiding the politicization of this tragic incident, emphasizing the importance of respect in addressing the subject.
