Taiwan has become the largest importer of Russian oil, purchasing 6.8 million tons of crude oil between February 2022 and June 2025. In the first half of 2025, imports increased sixfold compared to 2022, generating 1.3 billion dollars for Russia. Although Taiwan has joined international initiatives to sanction Russia and has provided 50 million dollars to Ukraine, energy imports have brought Moscow 11.2 billion dollars. State-owned companies in Taiwan have reduced imports, but private companies, such as Formosa Petrochemical Corporation, have significantly increased their purchases.
