The American Eagle ad, starring Sydney Sweeney, has caused controversy over beauty standards and eugenics, because of the play on words between "jeans" and "genes". Critics, including activist Jeff Kissubi, pointed out the racist implications of the message. The brand reacted, saying the ad was about the jeans and the actress's story. Donald Trump has backed Sweeney, noting that she is a registered Republican, which has sparked even more comments in the public space.
