Beznau nuclear power plant, the oldest in the world, has shut down its second reactor because of the heatwave to comply with environmental regulations. The water temperature in the Aare river has risen and the water used to cool the reactors cannot be discharged without damaging the local ecosystem. The operator Axpo has assured that Switzerland will continue to have enough electricity despite the shutdown of the reactors, which are planned to be shut down in 2032 and 2033.
