The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) proposed staging an assassination attempt on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to revitalize his declining electoral campaign. Internal documents obtained by The Washington Post show that, in the context of the April elections, the SVR observed a significant drop in public support for Orbán, who has been a strategic ally of Moscow within NATO and the EU.

The proposal to create a dramatic incident would have aimed to shift the campaign's perception from a rational approach to an emotional one, centered on security. Although no physical attacks have been recorded, the idea underscores the high stakes for the Kremlin. Orbán faces fierce competition from Peter Magyar, and public dissatisfaction with the state of the economy is on the rise. While Russia seeks to support Orbán, the United States is also showing interest in his electoral success. Russian disinformation campaigns and influence strategies continue to be a major concern in the context of the elections in Hungary.
