Survivors of Typhoon Rai, which caused over 400 deaths in the Philippines in 2021, have filed a lawsuit in London against Shell, accusing it of failing to take responsibility for the impact of climate change. NGOs like Greenpeace argue that this lawsuit represents an important step in the global movement to challenge the impunity of oil companies. Courts in Germany have already recognized the global responsibility of energy companies for damages related to greenhouse gas emissions. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of 103 survivors seeking compensation for their losses. Shell has rejected the allegations, deeming them unfounded and stating that it is focused on reducing emissions. The Philippines, affected by frequent tropical storms, remains one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.
