More than one million pieces of data stolen from Berlin’s administration were published on the darknet on Friday, following the cyberattack on August 14 and the authorities’ refusal to pay the ransom demanded. The hackers allegedly requested approximately two million euros.

The compromised information includes payroll lists, bank details, scans of identity documents, information about employees and disciplinary cases, protective measures for firefighters, as well as documents concerning the expansion of the German Chancellery. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the leak and attempting to identify the people affected.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner rejected the payment, arguing that it would not have guaranteed the deletion of the data. He announced that the administration would try to contact as quickly as possible those whose information may have been compromised.

The attack, attributed to the Rhysida ransomware group, affected two city departments. Several administrations, including those responsible for housing and the environment, were disconnected from the network for a week, while some services and payments were temporarily suspended. A central crisis unit is analyzing the published data, just days before the municipal elections on September 20th.
