On Wednesday, about 1,500 farmers, along with 348 tractors, protested in the center of Madrid, contesting the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, as well as the reduction of funds under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The farmers gathered in five columns and headed towards the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, where they expressed their grievances.
They believe that the free trade agreement will create unfair competition, as products from Mercosur will not meet the same production standards as European ones. The protest was organized by the organizations Union de Uniones and Unaspi, which warn that the agreement could affect consumer health and could lead to the disappearance of the European agricultural sector. Since the beginning of the year, Spanish farmers have organized several protests, and the agreement signed on January 17 has been sent to the EU Court of Justice for verification.
